Newnan and Senoia: A Blend of Heritage and Culture

The cities that make up this territory, before being founded by Europeans, were once owned by the Creek (Muscogee) people. That it’s where the county got its name: “Coweta” was chosen for the Creek tribe, whose land extended over much of Georgia and Alabama.

Although Coweta was one of the most prominent towns for the Creek Indians, they were eventually forcibly displaced under the Indian Removal Act in the 1830s. For more information on this part of history, you can visit the Senoia Area Historical Society And Museum.

During and after the Civil War, the economy of this county relied on agriculture. But as time passed and the railroad arrived in this territory, Coweta's economy was able to diversify. That’s when Newnan became known as the 'City of Homes,' because it was the residence of many of the workers.

This particular city has experienced significant growth over time. Newnan now offers a vibrant downtown area, numerous shopping malls, and is home to the Chattahoochee Bend State Park.
